I know what you’re thinking—an article on rugs in the film seems kind of random on the surface.

However, as with many visual components in moving pictures, rugs can play a part in capturing the overarching tones that directors seek to craft through their stories.

Just as rugs play a defining role in the look of your rooms at home, they also define the indirect language by which a movie communicates with the audience.

After you’ve read about some of the most interesting rugs in movies, you just might come to appreciate those films more.

Aladdin

Let’s start off with a more obvious example. Aladdin’s rug is an unforgettable factor in Disney’s rendition of the tale from Arabian Nights.

In true Disney form, the flying carpet shows just as much personality as any other supporting character. We watch as it annoys with Abu, cautiously approaches Aladdin, and hunches over in dejection at Abu’s subsequent reprimanding.

It then saves Aladdin and Abu from the Cave of Wonders and later serves as the platform for that famous song, “A Whole New World.”

More than being an animate, gravity-defying rug, the magic carpet reflects the wonder the other characters experience as their lives start to move away from the mundane. Where the rug goes, there’s an adventure to be had.

2019 Movie Synopsis:

From Disney comes the thrilling and vibrant live-action adaptation of the classic animated Aladdin, the exciting tale of the charming street rat Aladdin, the courageous, self-determined Princess Jasmine, and the Genie, who may be the key to their future.

The Big Lebowski

The Dude isn’t the kind of guy who appears to care all that much for his home décor.

The Big Lebowski rug

However, when two criminals break into his house and ruin his rug, he gets upset enough to try and get a new one from the Mr. Lebowski the thugs were actually trying to target.

He ends up getting what he wanted (unbeknownst to the rich Lebowski). From there, hijinks ensue as the Dude finds himself in increasingly sticky situations he would’ve rather avoided.

In this movie, the first rug acts as the impetus for our unlikely hero’s reluctant and odd journey.

The fact that he can’t seem to keep hold of his rugs reflects how he seems to be pushed around from event to event without a means of control.

His taste for bohemian patterns also gives the viewer a sense of the free-flowing nature of the Dude.

Movie Synopsis:

This Coen brothers' hilariously twisted and irreverent cult comedy-thriller stars Jeff Bridges, John Goodman, Steve Buscemi, and Julianne Moore.

Join the “Dude” and his bowling buddies on their journey that blends unforgettable characters, kidnapping, a case of mistaken identity, and White Russians.

The Shining

What would the primary setting of this movie, the Overlook Hotel, be without that distinctive carpet now known as The Shining carpet?

Although this pick is the type of floor covering you can’t just roll up and carry, the design is reminiscent of some rugs out there, and its significance has landed it a spot as one of the most interesting rugs in movies.

The oddly bright orange, deep red, and dark brown all come together in bold, repetitive hexagonal patterns that contrast starkly with the plain walls and doors in the hotel’s hallways.

It’s enough to give you an unsettling feeling as Danny plays with his toys and rides his tricycle.

This and that eerie soundscape alerts you that something is wrong here. As you continue to see the weird carpet pass by, its hypnotic pattern draws you in more, and you can’t help but continue watching as the hotel slowly reveals its true colors.

The scenes are nothing short of iconic.

The Shining Rug:
