The Green Berets
  • Amazon Prime Video (Video on Demand)
  • John Wayne, David Janssen, Jim Hutton (Actors)

The Green Berets

This movie is about A cynical reporter (David Janssen) who opposes the Vietnam War is sent to accompany a group of Green Berets to chronicle the fight. The crew is given a top-secret mission to go behind enemy lines and seize a key Viet Cong commander, led by the tough-as-nails Col. Mike Kirby (John Wayne).

Along the way, the reporter gains a better understanding of why America is fighting the war and assists in the rescue of a war orphan whose life has been ruined by the combat.

At some points, The Green Berets are more amusing than dangerous. The tough sergeant Aldo Ray, the clever scrounger Jim Hutton, and the sympathetic doctor Raymond St. Jacques are all stock characters from war movies.

Apart from the Viet Cong, George Takei and Jack Soo represent the Vietnamese. Soo, who I first saw on Broadway in Flower Drum Song, has a disarming deadpan tone that works well in comedy but not so well in drama.

Patton
  • Amazon Prime Video (Video on Demand)
  • George C. Scott, Karl Malden, Michael Bates (Actors)

Patton

The film “Patton” portrays the story of General George S. Patton, a legendary World War II tank commander. Patton’s career began in North Africa and continues through the invasion of Europe and the defeat of the Third Reich.

Patton’s various flaws, such as his temper and proclivity for insubordination, would prevent him from becoming the chief American commander in the Normandy Invasion and from being relieved as Occupation Commander of Germany, according to side storylines.

Patton is an entertaining and well-balanced film that bears up well thirty years later and can be respected for its craft.

Stripes
  • Amazon Prime Video (Video on Demand)
  • Bill Murray, Harold Ramis, Warren Oates (Actors)

Stripes

Following a bad day in which cab driver John Winger (Bill Murray) loses his job, his car, and his girlfriend Anita (Roberta Leighton), he persuades his best friend Russell (Harold Ramis) to join the army in order to travel and have fun.

They form a squad with misfits and outcasts, and John has issues with their strong Sergeant Hulka (Warren Oates). John and Russell get themselves into a lot of trouble, but the Military Police Officers Stella (P.J. Soles) and Louise constantly come to their rescue (Sean Young).

“Stripes” is a goofy and funny comedy, but then again, what else would you expect from a cast that includes Bill Murray, John Candy, John Larroquette, and other comedians?

The longer cut is lengthy, and most of the jokes are “politically incorrect” or sexist, but they are all entertaining. This is the first time you’ll ever see a 1981 comedy on screen, and you’ll surely have a great time watching it.

Olympus Has Fallen
  • Amazon Prime Video (Video on Demand)
  • Gerard Butler, Morgan Freeman, Dylan McDermott (Actors)

Olympus Has Fallen

Former Presidential Secret Service Agent Mike Banning is imprisoned within the White House (Secret Service Code: “Olympus”) after it is captured by a terrorist mastermind and the President is kidnapped.

As our national security team scrambles to respond, they must rely on Banning’s insider information to retake the White House, preserve the President, and escape a larger calamity.

The acting is outstanding, especially Morgan Freeman’s (and to a lesser extent, Gerard Butler’s and Aaron Eckhart’s), and the roller coaster ride is thrilling.

Saving Private Ryan
  • Amazon Prime Video (Video on Demand)
  • Tom Hanks, Edward Burns, Matt Damon (Actors)

Saving Private Ryan

Early on June 6, 1944, with the Allied invasion of Normandy, men of the 2nd Ranger Battalion, led by Cpt. Miller fights ashore to establish a beachhead. Two brothers are slain in battle during the fighting. A third brother was killed earlier in New Guinea.

Mrs. Ryan, their mother, will receive all three grave telegrams on the same day. When the United States Army Chief of Staff, George C. Marshall, learns of a fourth brother, Private James Ryan, he decides to send out 8 soldiers (including Cpt. Miller and members of the 2nd Rangers) to find him and return him to his mother.

It lays forth a million reasons why no one should go to war, as well as one strong reason to go to war. It’s a heartbreakingly accurate portrayal of what our grandfathers, fathers, uncles, brothers, and sons have gone through in humanity’s darkest hours. Not just during WWII, but during any war.
