Who started BET?

Robert L. Johnson decided to launch his own cable television network. The network, which was named Black Entertainment Television (BET), was launched on January 25, 1980.

Initially broadcasting for two hours a week as a block of programming on the Madison Square Garden Sports Network (which would change its name to USA Network three months after BET), the network's lineup consisted of music videos and reruns of popular black sitcoms. (Source: BET Media Room)

According to Fortune, it would not be until 1983 that BET became a full-fledged entity, independent of any other channel or programming block.

In 2001, the network was bought by Viacom. In 2005, Johnson retired from the network, turning over his titles of president and chief executive officer.

Will there be original series and content on BET Plus?

(Image: TV Line)

BET Plus' 2019 premiere will include the comedy series “First Wives Club.” Based on the 1996 film, the 10-episode First Wives Club stars Jill Scott (Black Lightning), Ryan Michelle Bathe (This Is Us), and Michelle Buteau (Enlisted) as three New York City women who form a united front after all of their marriages fall apart.

Why is a streaming service like BET Plus important?

“African-Americans are the leading consumers of streaming services, with higher SVOD adoption rates than other consumers, which is why we’re so excited to launch a premium product for this underserved audience.

BET Plus is a natural extension of BET’s linear network, which has been the leading home of black culture for decades,” said Mills.

“Tyler Perry is the perfect partner for BET Plus. The combination of new, original shows and his giant library of popular movies, series and stage plays that Tyler brings to our joint venture creates an amazing product for his large and passionate fan base.”

If you are interested in BET Plus, also check out 100's Black movies on Netflix, too.

Amazon Prime also features Black sitcoms like A Different World and The Cosby Show, reality TV shows like Big Freedia, daytime TV show Lauren Lake's Paternity Court, and movies like Why Did I Get Married Too?, Biker Boyz, and Tyler Perry's Boo! 2 A Madea Halloween.
