Hulu: Everything You Need to Know to Get the Most Out of Hulu

Learn everything you need to know as a new subscriber to Hulu to get the most enjoyment out of your new subscription or decide if you want to add it.

I get it. Everybody wants to spend a bit of time on the tube these days, having a lot of time on your hands There's no way a person wants to just sit and do nothing at home. And a person can only do so many home improvement projects in silence. Seriously.

So, if you're looking to get your groove on with a few more viewing options, definitely check out Hulu.

With between 4,000-5,000 movies and shows available at any given time, hours of viewing that, surprisingly don't overlap that much with your other streaming options, Hulu is a great way to binge.

And if you're not familiar with Hulu yet, this is everything you need to know to get the most out of Hulu.

What is Hulu?

Hulu is the underdog streaming destination for a large library of movies, shows, and more. It's the leading competitor to Netflix and Amazon Prime–with very little overlap in the offerings. According to PCMAG, as of 2018, Hulu, Amazon, and Netflix only overlapped in 7 titles. Hulu and Amazon have a few more duplicate titles (277) and Hulu only overlaps with Netflix by 52.

So, if you're looking to just add to your streaming services, Hulu might be a great option.

Or if you're new to streaming, being the cheaper (although by not much), Hulu might be your way to “dip your toes in”.

What does Hulu include?

Hulu on its own has a large selection of movies and shows, including:

    • 90-day Fiance
    • Brooklyn Nine-Nine
    • The Good Place
    • America's Got Talent
    • The Great
    • Rick and Morty
    • One Piece
    • Blindspot
    • Grey's Anatomy

In addition, there is the option to add Hulu with Live TV which has live content broadcast on Hulu in the moment and later available, as well.

Is Hulu part of Disney plus?

Hulu, Disney+, and ESPN+ are all included in the Disney Bundle. Hulu: Hulu's streaming library contains thousands of popular movies and TV series. The Disney Bundle can be customized to add the Hulu plan of your choosing.

How much does Hulu cost?

Hulu costs $5.99 a month in the US with ads. For a no-ad experience, you can pay $11.99 a month in the US.

This includes two simultaneous streams and 4K quality with 5.1 surround sound if you use an HDMI connection and enable 5.1 PCM or bitstream audio.

You can add HBO Max by bumping the price up to $14.99 a month.

By adding in HBO Max, you get access to the HBO library of titles including hits like Game of Thrones and other big-name HBO shows.

Is Hulu all free?

You can use Hulu for free regardless of which version you sign up for. Hulu subscribers can use their Hulu account to subscribe to additional premium streaming services.

Where can I sign up for Hulu?

You can get access to Hulu in two ways:

  • Sign-up at Hulu.com
  • Sign-up with Amazon Prime
  • Sign-up with Disney+ and ESPN Plus

Signing up with Hulu directly gets you access to the full library of something like 1,650 shows and 2,500 movies on Hulu.

Signing up for Amazon Prime, currently, allows you to access 12,000 movies and shows on Amazon Prime in addition to the full library of Hulu with only a 1/3 of Hulu‘s materials being duplicated on Prime.

There is another option to get Hulu. You can sign up for a bundle of Hulu, Disney+, and ESPN Plus for costs $13.99 a month in the US. This option gets you an even wider library of options to enjoy. The likelihood of programming duplication from Hulu to Disney+ is incredibly unlikely and the same for ESPN which focuses mostly on sports content.

What kind of content does Hulu have?

Hulu has an extensive library that hits a wide variety of genres. Whether you're looking for anime, news, action, true crime, romantic comedies, documentaries or even original content, Hulu has a bit of all.

  • The Great
  • Ugly Dolls
  • 12 Monkeys
  • Vikings
  • Transformers
  • Abominable
  • Wonder Park
  • Little Fires
  • Hillary
  • Siren

Is there a Hulu app?

Yes. Downloadable on iTunes or the Android Store, with the free app, you can watch on smart TVs, phones, laptops, tablets, and gaming consoles.

The app also supports closed captioning, descriptive audio, and navigation assistance to help subscribers with disabilities.

This app is separate from the Amazon Prime app, if you sign up for that service as well, or if you sign up for the bundle with Disney+ and ESPN Plus. Access to Hulu titles even in the bundle, though, because the apps are separate, allows you to stream on multiple screens for EACH APP.

So, with two people signed in and streaming on Disney+ (ie. my two kids) and two adults signed in on Hulu (ie. myself and my spouse), well, that won't hit your limits.

Additionally, having the secondary streaming app allows you to be able to tether your Disney+ or Amazon account to the TV via a Chromecast or Fire Stick and you can still watch something on the second app on your device.

How can I get a discount on Hulu?

The cheapest option to get Hulu is with the ad-supported version for $5.99 a month. The bundle options provide more watching opportunities outside of Hulu, but that doesn't reduce the cost of Hulu. You just increase the cost and add more movies. So, the choice is yours.

If you're looking for the best “deal” on having the most options to find something you might want to watch and save a bit, the bundle with Disney+ and ESPN is the best option to get access to Hulu.

But if you already pay for Amazon Prime, adding Hulu is free and might be a better option.

Should I subscribe to Hulu? Is Hulu worth it?

Hulu really appeals to:

  • Young Adults
  • Children
  • Married Couples
  • People Who Like to Binge Watch Series

There's seriously such a wide selection, there are a very large and wide variety of shows that will appeal to an incredibly wide audience.
