The Best Movies To Watch for Interior Design Inspiration

It seems like everything is more beautiful on the silver screen. Characters roll out of bed with their hair and makeup miraculously in place. Characters who shouldn’t have enough to pay the rent have impeccable wardrobes. And, of course, the interior design is always perfect, whether it’s a chic New York apartment or a cozy cabin in the woods.

So when it comes to beautifying our surroundings, it makes sense to turn to the silver screen for inspiration. If you’re ready to decorate, these are the best movies to watch for interior design inspiration.

Pillow Talk
  • Amazon Prime Video (Video on Demand)
  • Rock Hudson, Doris Day, Tony Randall (Actors)

Pillow Talk (1959)

This ’50s classic is the best flick for immersing yourself in a retro style, especially since this rom-com’s female lead, Jan Morrow (Doris Day), is an interior designer. Her rose-colored apartment is a study in incorporating pastels into space, while her romantic interest, Broadway playboy Brad Allen (Rock Hudson), offers a more neutral, traditionally masculine look.

On top of that, Morrow’s last interior design project of the film—a revenge plot against the lying Allen– gives you a hilarious look at how not to design a space.

Penelope (2008)

This story of a wealthy girl cursed with the nose of a pig is a touching, modern fairy tale that inspires us to appreciate all the beautiful quirks that make us special. And all this whimsical, wholesome charm is on display in the titular main character Penelope’s (Christina Ricci) bedroom.

Penelope’s childhood bedroom is an enchanting forest green, with fanciful pops of color using a sculpted pink tree, flower vases, birds, and dollhouse furniture encased in glass—which, cleverly, alludes to Penelope’s own isolation from the world. The butterflies and quirky artwork covering the walls help drive this room’s look—and metaphoric message—home.

Twilight
  • Amazon Prime Video (Video on Demand)
  • Kristen Stewart, Robert Pattinson, Billy Burke (Actors)

The Twilight Saga (2008-2012)

If you were a teenager in the late 2000s, you probably remember the endless debates about the Twilight books and movies. But even if you can’t decide if the movies were any good (or if you were on Team Edward or Team Jacob), we can all agree that the house of the “vegetarian” vampire family, the Cullens, was gorgeous.

The Twilight Saga White Collection
  • Meyer, Stephenie (Author)
  • English (Publication Language)

The books describe the Cullens’ home as light, open, and elegantly appareled. And Hoke’s House, the house that represents it in the films, embodied that image with wood floors and an endless expanse of glass windows looking out at the forest. Other elements that emphasize light and space, such as floating shelves and light-colored artwork, only serve to emphasize the sense of understated grandeur.

The Great Gatsby
  • Amazon Prime Video (Video on Demand)
  • Leonardo DiCaprio, Tobey Maguire, Carey Mulligan (Actors)

The Great Gatsby (2013)

The 1925 novel The Great Gatsby spends a lot of time describing the interior of its characters’ homes. And if you’re looking for the best film to watch for interior design inspiration, the 2013 version of Gatsby most fully captures these interiors.

The Great Gatsby: The Only Authorized Edition
  • Great product!
  • Fitzgerald, F. Scott (Author)

Gatsby’s mansion embodies the art deco style that the 1920s was so famous for, while the Buchanan mansion exudes a more understated “East Egg” elegance.
