Day of the Dead Movies

Are you looking for Day of the Dead movies to watch? Here are your choices, including a great Day of the Dead movie on Netflix. It's part of the Halloween movies series I created.

What is the Day of the Dead?

Day of the Dead or Dia de los muertos is a multi-day Mexican holiday celebrated by people of Mexican heritage which focuses on gatherings of family and friends to pray for and remember friends and family members who have died and help support their spiritual journey.

In 2023, Day of the Dead 2023 will begin on Wednesday, November 1, and ends on Thursday, November 2.

The symbolism includes:
  • Sugar skulls – Along with toys, they are left on the altars for children who have passed. The skull is used not as a morbid symbol but rather as a whimsical reminder of the cyclicality of life, which is why they are brightly decorated.
  • Marigolds – A specific type of marigold flower, native to Mexico, is often placed ofrendas (a collection of objects placed on a ritual altar) and around graves. With their strong scent and vibrant color, the petals are used to make a path that leads the spirits from the cemetery to their families' homes.
  • Monarch butterflies –  They play a role in because they are believed to hold the spirits of the departed. This belief stems from the fact that the first monarchs arrive in Mexico for the winter each fall on Nov. 1, which coincides with Día de Los Muertos.
